Ian has practised town planning for more than 30 years, initially working in local government with Surrey Heath Borough Council and Reigate & Banstead Borough Council. He joined Bell Cornwell in 1987 and became a Partner in March 2001.

Ian is involved in a broad spectrum of planning work in both urban and rural locations throughout England - including central London - acting for private, public and corporate clients. His caseload is principally focused on development control issues, dealing with residential and commercial projects at critical stages in the planning process. This work includes initial site appraisals, planning applications and appeals for a development schemes ranging from residential extensions to major urban expansions.

He has considerable experience in co-ordinating development project teams, engaging in negotiations with local planning authorities, and appearing as an expert witness at public inquiries and appeal hearings. He is also active in promoting potential development sites through the LDF regime and analysing relevant draft planning policies in order to maximise the future potential of clients’ property or proposed acquisitions.

Ian is a chartered town planner having been elected as a Member of the RTPI in 1984. He holds a BA (Hons) degree in Economics and Geography and an MSc degree in Environmental Planning and Design. He chairs Bell Cornwell’s monthly Practice Meeting and has produced a number of Practice Notes advising clients and professional contacts on emerging and newly adopted planning legislation.
