Boarding House for Academy in Uxbridge

Bell Cornwell assisted the Harefield Academy in gaining planning permission for a boarding house to accommodate up to 50 students to support the continuing success of the new Academy. The Academy started in 2005 and moved into new buildings on the site in 2008. The boarding house was the next stage of the project.

The boarding house offers accommodation to students who for various reasons are unable to live at home and for specialist sports students who would otherwise travel from outside the area. The specific nature of the scheme and the clear way in which the facility is managed reassured residents that it would be a benefit to the area and would not cause undue disturbance.

The main constraints of the project were the Green Belt location of the site and the need to ensure the development complemented the existing buildings on the site and neighbouring properties. A public exhibition was held prior to the submission of the planning application along with pre-application discussions with the Council to agree the principles of the location and the design.

Following the Council’s resolution to grant planning permission the application had to be referred to the Government Office for London and the Greater London Authority as a result of its size and Green belt location. Both bodies were required to advise whether they were happy for the planning permission to be granted. Bell Cornwell corresponded with them and they both confirmed their acceptance of the Council’s resolution.
