Permission Granted for Extensions to Bishops Wordsworth’s School, Salisbury

Planning permission has been granted for extensions to the science block at Bishops Wordsworth’s School, Salisbury.

The proposals included infilling to the front elevation, alterations to the roof to provide additional floor space and the provision of new fire exits. The scheme was particularly sensitive as the site falls within the Salisbury Conservation Area and within the setting of several heritage assets, including the Grade 1 Salisbury Cathedral, which is situated next to the school campus.

Bell Cornwell prepared a detailed Heritage Impact Assessment in support of the application and worked closely with the local authority and project architects to make necessary design revisions throughout the determination period in order to overcome concerns raised about impact on neighbouring amenity and the visual impact of an extra storey and to agree a scheme that preserves the character and appearance of this sensitive location, whilst providing much needed additional classroom space for the growing school.
